Maria Caulfield has called on Lewes District Council to acknowledge the benefit that dropping parking charges over the holiday period could have for businesses, and has said that such a move could serve as a pilot scheme towards cutting all parking charges within the town, which Maria originally called for in August.
She said: “I would like to see the Council encourage members of the public to go to the High Street, particularly during the festive season, and if residents know they can park for free it could be the boost the town needs.”
“The ring road around Newhaven effectively cuts off the town centre. I remain committed to free parking being introduced across the town throughout the year, however consider that cutting parking charges over the holiday period could demonstrate the benefits that free parking can bring for local communities and provide a welcome festive shot in the arm for businesses and residents alike.
“The regeneration of Newhaven is a very important issue for me and that is why I have established my local office there - and eliminating parking charges in the town centre could be what the town needs to shape up for the busy holiday season. She notes that busy towns in the Wealden District retained free parking which has discouraged people from shopping further afield.
