Shoreham Rugby Club players were joined by East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton and Adur District Council chairman Carson Albury on Saturday for a touch rugby tournament.

Mr Loughton took part in the game, wearing a bright green tutu, as well as presenting the club with the Natwest Rugby Force Pride of the Nation award for London and the South East, which it had re-gained this year.

Mr Albury was also game and donned a tutu for the match.

Chairman Mark Norris said: “We thought it would be a fun and eye-catching idea to ask people to sponsor the lads to wear something unexpected and play a game of rugby, that is when tutus sprang to mind.

“It was also a good way to raise awareness for girl’s rugby. We are hoping to put together a mixed girl’s team by the time the new season starts this September.

“Training will start this summer at Buckingham Park, so please get in touch and come along if you are interested.”

The tutu tournament was a sponsored event at the annual Rugby Force Funday, to raise money towards the new club-house in Buckingham Park, Shoreham.

The club has had council planning approval already, but still needs to raise around £100,000 before building work can start.

Shoreham player Max Ayala Paviour, 13, said: “Out of all the Sussex teams in the Under 13 league, we are the only ones without a club-house.

“It’s embarrassing when we host home games that we have nowhere to entertain our visitors and the changing rooms are really old and cramped.”
