MP gives his backing to Walberton villagers who are opposing travellers' site

Residents fighting proposals for a travellers' site in Walberton have been backed by their MP.

Nick Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs, met villagers who oppose the use of the land between Walberton Lane and the A27.

He listened to their concerns about the possible impact of a travellers' site on their community.

Arun District Council's consultants have identified the site as having the potential for up to five pitches.

The council is considering the results of a consultation into the list of locations across the district before it produces a policy which includes the 18 new pitches which the government has ordered it to provide by 2016.

Mr Herbert said: "I accept people from different backgrounds and traditions should be allowed to lead their lives in their own way provided they do not cause a nuisance to others.

"But, when land for housing is scarce, I don't see why travellers should be treated any differently from other people who are waiting for affordable housing."

Mr Herbert continued: "I've received dozens of emails and letters from my constituents about the issue of travellers' sites in Arun and met with a number of local residents and councillors.

"I respect the fact these are decisions for the district council and they have to follow government guidelines.

"But, as the local MP, I have made my views, and those of my constituents, very clear and I have asked the council to take these on board."

In his formal submission to the district council, shadow environment secretary Mr Herbert criticised errors in the consultants' report.

He also questioned whether it was right to give travellers preferential treatment when land was allocated for affordable homes.
