MP hails Barnham teen Tyler a ‘local hero’

Tyler Murphy, 17, has survived a four-year battle with a brain tumour, endured 11 operations and has set up his own charitable group, Tyler’s Trust, to help children with life-threatening illnesses.

Mr Herbert met Tyler, his mother, Janice Ellis, and two of the trust’s members, Lorraine Matthews and Leanne Farr, at the Barnham Community Hall on Friday (October 24) to learn more about what they do.

Speaking of his time with the teen, Mr Herbert said: “I can see why his family and friends are so proud of this local hero, and I am sure that his gift boxes will be hugely appreciated by the children who receive them.”

While dealing with his treatment, Tyler made small personal gifts to other children who were also having treatment and he saw what a difference it made to them.

He set up Tyler’s Trust to raise awareness of brain tumours in children, and to raise money to make more gift boxes, full of gadgets, toys and books, to bring joy into other children’s lives. So far, Tyler has delivered 20 boxes to local children. But with dozens of children with life-threatening illnesses on Tyler’s books, he needs more help. He even hopes to rope in Mr Herbert in delivering some gifts, an idea the MP was ‘delighted’ with.
