MP is on board with rowing club project

THE future of Bexhill Rowing Club was under discussion when MP Greg Barker met with Bob Mitchell of the fundraising committee .

The pair looked over the seafront site where the old boathouse once stood and discussed how work on the new build would progress, as well as the imminent need for fundraising.

Having considered the immediate hopes of the club, Greg said: “Bexhill Rowing Club, of which I am very proud to be patron, is one of the town’s greatest sporting assets, and the achievements of our rowers are something we can all take great delight in.

“However they now need our help in order to fit out the exciting new clubhouse that will emerge, so I am putting my head together with the club to see how we can raise more money for the fantastic local work to continue and ensure the fine tradition of rowing will go into the future.”

Bob has great connection with the club not least because his two sons, Matt and Mark, are a significant part of its current success.

Bob said: “Mr Barker has identified some actions to help us make progress and his proactive involvement will be key to raising (hopefully) £20,000 from the wider and corporate communities.

“As always, the Bexhill and Rother community is being very generous with its help to the rowers in contributing to the raising of the rest of the funds.

“A total budget of £60,000 to £70,000 is needed for the work.”

He added that Town Mayor Jimmy Carroll would be donating some of the proceeds from his charity evening at the Cooden Beach Hotel at the weekend in response to the role that Bexhill Rowing club plays in the local community.
