MP LEADS FLOOD DEFENCE DELEGATION

LEWES MP Norman Baker has led a delegation to London, calling for better flood defences for the town.

Mr Baker, along with members of Lewes Flood Action and the mayor, Merlin Milner, met Environment Minister Ian Pearson at DEFRA headquarters in order to keep up the pressure on the government to improve local flood defences.

After the meeting, he said: 'I am glad that, after six years of delay since the disastrous floods in 2000, the government finally seems to be taking the problem seriously.

'We had a very constructive meeting, with a frank exchange of views from all sides.

'I hope the government now understands that its sticking plaster approach on flooding is no good for anyone.

'Action must be taken, and soon.'
