WEALDEN MP Charles Hendry has opened Uckfield Baptist Church’s new youth centre, The Source.
The new youth centre has been the outcome of several years of hard work and commitment by Richard Dowling, youth worker for Uckfield Baptist Church, who said: “Children matter, therefore we invest in their future today. That is why we have resourced the youth centre to show the value that we place on young people. All this costs time and money which we invest gladly.”
The Source has existed since 2007. Uckfield Baptist Church started renting the space in 2009, using it for various youth focused events.
Their use of this centre gradually grew until they were using it for toddler groups, drop-in sessions and youth clubs. This year, in March, the church took out a five-year lease on the building, having raised enough funds. They aimed to turn the space into a permanent youth centre.
Charles Hendry, a keen supporter of youth initiatives across his constituency said: “I was delighted to be invited to open this new centre, The Source. It will be an important facility for both the Uckfield Baptist community as well as the wider Uckfield population. “I would like to say a huge thank you to the Baptist Church for having the vision to see what could be achieved and the commitment to make it happen.
“It is important that young people have a safe place where they can go to relax, take part in a range of activities and events, and spend time with their peers, and I feel that this will be an excellent environment for that to happen.”
The event was also attended by the Mayor of Uckfield, local minister and head teachers from local schools.
