MP pledges support for Catsfield School road safety bid

Bexhill and Battle MP Huw Merriman visited Catsfield CE Primary School to talk to Year 5 and 6 pupils in Leopards Class about their campaign.

The children explained have been working closely with Catsfield Parish Council in a bid to find ways of making the road outside their school safer.

Last week pupils carried out a speed survey and found that at least half the cars driving past the school were over the speed limit of 30mph.

The children told Mr Merriman they were worried about the safety of the children crossing the road at the beginning and end of the day.

They also expressed their fears for the school’s lollipop man, who has nearly been hit by vehicles a number of times.

Church Road is used as a rat run and some drivers do not slow down when they are near the school, despite the school warning signs.

The parish council has been working with the school on this project.

There are plans to install some safety measures along the stretch of road, with the support of East Sussex County Council.

Huw Merriman has offered to give the school and parish council his full support in a bid to ensure the safety measures are put in place as soon as possible.

Mr Merriman said: “I was really impressed with the work that pupils in Leopards Class have already done to make the road outside their school safer.

“They showed me their latest data which clearly demonstrates that drivers do not slow down when passing the school.

“I am pleased to see that Catsfield Parish Council and the primary school are working closely together to deal with this problem and I will be giving them my full support.”
