East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton has written to Lancing parish councillor Leslie Sampson questioning why he did not tell his Conservative colleagues what he was intending to do, and to ask him to stand down and force an ‘inevitable’ byelection.

Mr Sampson last week joined the UKIP group but did not inform his Conservative colleagues that he was doing so.

Mr Loughton said: “It’s time Leslie let the people decide
and stopped trying to save his own skin.

“All credibility he had has gone and he has no electoral mandate for what he has done.

“If he really believes that serving UKIP is the right thing to do and what the public want, then he should resign and let democracy run its course. A by-election is inevitable.”
