Mr Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, visited Saunders Energy in Littlehampton Marina.

The rotating PowerFrame turbines, designed and built by Saunders Energy, work by harnessing the tidal power created by moving with the flow of the water while on steel runners.

The company hopes that each one can generate enough electricity to power several homes.

Mr Gibb said: “I am very impressed with their innovative engineering and pleased that they have chosen Littlehampton waters to undertake such pioneering work into this essential industry.”

Although one turbine has been in operation since June for testing purposes, Littlehampton Harbour will be home to four more in the coming months.

Each unit costs about £25,000 and Saunders Energy hopes that they will appeal to groups who are looking to become more environmentally friendly.

PowerFrame is fixed below the surface of the water. The faster the water flows the more electricity it generates.

It is intended for use in water flowing at three or more knots.
