Mr Waterson, Eastbourne, Willingdon and East Dean MP, thanked friends and colleagues who supported him.

He said: 'This is a relief but no surprise.

'I had done nothing wrong and assaulted no-one.

'I have not been charged with anything.'

Mr Waterson believed he and his family had been 'victims of heavy-handed policing and gross media intrusion.'

Official complaints are being made to the Metropolitan Police and the Press Complaints Commission.

Mr Waterson added: 'I would ask for no further intrusion into our private family life.

'I shall be making no further comment on these matters.'
