MP's concern over flood information

LEWES MP Norman Baker has called for urgent steps to be taken to involve the public in a flood consultation process that, he claims, few in Lewes have heard of.

The consultation being carried out by specialists deals with future flood defence work.

Yet the original circulation list identifies only six members of the public, he said. Even he as MP was not included.

What kind of consultation is it that few have even heard of? he added.

Those directly affected by the floods last year must have their say on the way forward.

It s all very well saying the report has been available at the library, but what use is that if no one knows it s there?

Agency Sussex manager Peter Midgley said in reply this week: I am disappointed that Norman Baker feels that we have not publicised this issue enough - when we have done everything in our power to do so.

I cannot thank the local media enough for the support it has provided the Agency.

Indeed it was essential in ensuring that people knew the Ouse Flood Report was available at public exhibitions in April and from their local library.

I must emphasise that the consultation process is not over. I welcome comments from the people of Lewes. It is hugely important that they have their say over what happens to their town.

The next stage in the process will be presented to a public meeting at Lewes Town Hall on Monday at 6.30pm.

I do not want to see a repeat of last autumn s Ouse floods and I know my officers, who witnessed at first hand the misery and suffering caused to those living in the town, feel the same, added Mr Midgley
