Multi-million pound scheme to improve wastewater completed

Construction of the £2.7 million upgrade at Westfield Wastewater Treatment Works has finished and testing of the new equipment is taking place.

The scheme included construction of two sand filters – large tanks, containing 50 tons of sand.

This will give an extra clean to the treated flows leaving the site, in Main Road, Westfield.

The upgrade also included new monitors to continuously check the treated water leaving the site is of the best possible quality, in line with new Environment Agency requirements.

Southern Water project manager Julie Anne Stokes said: “We’re delighted to be reaching the end of this important scheme.

“By using specialist treatment methods we can ensure the water recycled back to the environment continues to meet stringent standards.”

The project is part of Southern Water’s £1.8 billion programme of work being carried out between 2010 and 2015 to improve and maintain its pipes, sewers, water supply works and treatment works.
