Multiplex cinema is top of wish list for young people in Bognor Regis

Nearly every young person in Bognor Regis wants to see a multiplex cinema in the town.

The demand for a modern facility to see the latest big-screen blockbusters is apparent from the largest survey of teenagers carried out around the town.

As many as 84 per cent '“ or 384 individuals '“ who answered the question said 'yes' to a multiplex. Only 23 respondents said 'no'.

For a bowling alley, the response was almost as overwhelming. Those in favour were 80 per cent, or 353, against 28 against.

A total of 515 responses in all were received in the survey from 11 to 19-year-olds.

Organiser Jason O'Hagan, the project manager of the Konnect detached youth work team, said: "We wanted to find out what young people wanted in the town and what they didn't want.

"The number of responses we got back shows this survey is a significant piece of work.

"It shows the amount of interest in the town there is among young people. The fact there were 45 questions shows they had to take their time completing the survey.

"Everyone I have spoken to says it's the biggest survey of young people that's taken place in the town that they are aware of.

"All the comments we have had from people about the survey is that they are impressed with it."

Those who took part were asked at youth clubs and by Konnect's three youth workers.

The survey was conducted in recent months. Its results were mentioned at Konnect's annual meeting last week.

"We are going to tell the results of the survey to the people who we think should be listening to what young people have to say," said Mr O'Hagan.

"We will also use the survey for our benefit so we know we are providing a relevant service for young people."

The questionnaire also covered the attitudes to the regeneration of Bognor.

Of the 135 comments made, 29 were against more housing in Bersted and Felpham and along the seafront because it would lead to overcrowding.

The next biggest category was the 16 individuals in favour of the schemes. But 15 were against the housing because it would attract more Polish people. A further 14 didn't want more housing because it would mean more foreigners.

Most of the other comments were negative for various other reasons.

It was the same attitude to a question about building more roads. Most '“ 44 per cent or 191 individuals '“ were opposed to extra roads, though 30 per cent were undecided and 26 per cent were in favour.

The survey also covered the need for more sports facilities around the town, the desire for lower public transport fares and a discount card for admission fees.

Also included were after-school facilities, skateparks and the services in an ideal youth club.
