Murdered man's widow asks: Why did it happen

FOR the last seven months since Robert McDowall was murdered, his widow has been asking the same question over and over again.

"Why did it happen? What makes someone take another's life away, for a mirror?

"It is all such a waste. I keep asking myself, why, why, why?"

A jury took just 45 minutes to find a Hastings man guilty of murdering Mr McDowall by running him down with his car.

Dale Baysting, 22, was jailed for life.

The incident happened in Endwell Road in the early hours of July 15 last year.

Lewes Crown Court erupted on Wednesday afternoon as the guilty verdict was read out.

The families of both the victim and the defendant broke down in tears.

Baysting looked stunned as he was taken down to begin a life sentence.

Judge Richard Brown told Baysting, who has one previous conviction for assault: "In your drunken and angry state that night you deliberately took the life of Mr McDowall.

"In doing so you deprived his family of a beloved member."

Robert McDowall was a successful chartered architect with his own practice who had worked and travelled all over the world.
