Museum forced to move into an uncertain future

TRUSTEES of Arundel Museum were left 'frustrated' and looking for a new home following confirmation that Arun District Council will not be renewing the lease on Arundel Museum's High Street location.

At a meeting of Arun District's cabinet on Monday afternoon, councillors voted to not extend the museum's lease beyond 2007. This means the museum, which has recently received full accreditation under the Museums Libraries and Archives accreditation scheme, has to move its extensive collection of more than 3,000 artefacts, 2,500 photographs and 900 documents to an as yet undetermined site.

At the meeting, the district council did agree to allocate up to 300,000 towards a new building, subject to matched funding being found by an 'Arundel Museum task force', from lottery, heritage or other sources.
