Museum lines upexciting events

On Tuesday (8), Rye councillor and historian Jo Kirkham will be giving a talk entitled ‘Rye Castle: The Tale of Two Towers’.

It takes place at the Museum’s East Street building at 7.30pm. There will be a raffle and refreshments. All are welcome and admission is £3 for non-members.

The Women’s Tower at Rye Castle, thought to be the oldest surviving female prison in the country, was opened to the public last autumn for the first time since it was built in 1837.

The official opening ceremony took place in March this year.

The restoration of the Women’s Tower was the culmination of a joint effort over a period of years by Rye Castle Museum and the Rye Partnership , backed by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wealden and Rural Rother Partnership and Rother District Council, and excellent support from museum members and volunteers.

Professionally-created displays include the recreation of a woman’s cell complete with an audio-visual presentation

The museum was recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.

A Garden Party, in aid of the museum, takes place on Saturday July 19 at 11 High St, Rye from 10.30am -1pm. There will be various stalls and refreshments.
