A CHARITABLE music festival championing the mod-rock scene of the 60s and 70s enjoyed its best year to date.

Music Mania drew a crowd of around 3,000 to Worthing Rugby Club, in Roundstone Lane, Angmering, for a weekend of bands, fairground rides and trade stalls.

Organiser Darren Bradley, 46, from Rustington, said: “Even though the weather on the Friday was absolutely dreadful, this year was the best attended event since it started in 2011. We had nothing but positive feedback. People have already contacted me saying when are tickets available for next year.”

This year’s festival was headlined by English ska band Bad Manners and mod-revivalists Secret Affair.

“I’m always trying to look for bands that either haven’t played in this area or that people would hope to see playing the south coast,” said Darren.

“It’s a tricky one though, because the genre it’s around is the 60s, 70s and 80s a lot of those bands don’t exist anymore. It’s a mix of good tribute bands and original artists.”

Money raised at the event through a charity auction and raffle is donated to Help for Heroes. The armed forces are very close to Darren’s heart – the first Music Mania was organised following the death of one of his friends in the Army, his son served in the navy and his nephew is in the Paras.

The festival is beginning to outgrow the rugby club and talks with alternative venues are already underway.
