Musicians pucker up for the Big Blow

MORE than 70 German musicians from Lewes' twin town Waldshut took part in the The Big Blow concert at Ringmer Community College on Sunday.

The event was the highlight of a weekend festival in Lewes district, organised by LGB Brass, Lewes Twinning Association and the college.

On Saturday afternoon the Mayor of Lewes, Cllr Merlin Milner and Mike Turner, from the Lewes Twinning Association, welcomed Stadtmusik Waldshut at a reception at the John Harvey Tavern.

The band treated shoppers to a free outdoor concert in Lewes precinct and the next day a total of five bands took part in the Big Blow event and each gave a short concert, culminating in a spectacular massed band performance.

The audience of around 200 people joined in for the finale, Sussex by the Sea.

The evening also included the world premier performance by LGB Brass of a new piece, March Stadtmusik Waldshut.

It was written for the occasion by the band's resident composer, Nigel Simmons.

Musical director, Ian Stewart, presented the score to Arne Muller, the conductor of Stadtmusik Waldshut.
