The fog was seen in Eastbourne and along the coast as far as Hastings and beyond early Tuesday evening (June 30).

Initial theories were that there was a fire somewhere that had caused it.

Eastbourne resident Colin Amess was flying back from Hungary on a private plane when he saw the blue smog.

“From the air you could see the plume passing the shoreline at Hastings with Beachy Head sticking out in the distance and the plume making landfall at Eastbourne,” said Colin, who sent in these three photographs.

“I wondered if there might have been something at Dungeness Power Station that had caused it and have been in contact with them but so far it remains a mystery.”

Do you have any ideas what the mystery blue plume might have been?
