The mystery benefactor posted six envelopes each stuffed with £20 notes to the town’s Mind outlet.

Their total came to a staggering £1,060. Every envelope was accurately addressed and franked from a different region of England.

Shop manager Jane Davies said: “It was a real surprise to receive the money. There wasn’t a letter or anything else in the envelopes. There were just the £20 notes.

“It’s a big deal for a small shop like ours to receive that amount of money. We are very grateful but also a little sad that there’s no-one to thank.”

The donations arrived every other day in the post during Christmas week. Jane and her assistant manager, Janet Dawkins, have spent the past month trying to find out about the donor. But no-one has come forward.

Jane said: “When the first envelope arrived, I thought it was a mistake and that someone had posted the money wrongly.

“I’ve worked here for two years and it’s the first anonymous donation we’ve had.”

The £1,060 has been passed to the Mind Matters trading arm of Mind for the charity’s work providing advice and support to those with a mental health problem and campaigning and raising awareness.
