This picture of the colourful new entrance sign for Yapton was sent in by resident Tricia Wales.

She asked exactly where it had come from and initially councillors were at a loss to explain it’s sudden appearance in replacing the former sign which had been hit by a car.

Tricia said: “For months a dismal, plain white, no colour boring ‘Welcome to Yapton’ sign has lain flat on its face at the northern entrance to Yapton Village at North End Road.

“No-one has bothered to replace or repair it and probably no wonder. However, from out of nowhere, someone has taken it upon themselves to make a fabulous, colourful welcoming new Yapton sign, which you can see from the picture evokes Yapton’s past industry, the lovely old Church and the once-flourishing canal.”

When asked, Yapton Parish Council clerk Andrew Gardiner said: “Unfortunately, Yapton PC cannot take any credit for the sign except to say we have been putting pressure on West Sussex County Council to replace the old finger sign which was originally there.”

But the mystery was finally solved when Joan Phillips, county councillor for Middleton, said: “The new sign was in the pipeline but I hadn’t been told it had been done. “That’s often the case but I’ve been told its the county council who replaced it.”
