National award for Bognor youth’s work

Joseph Skinner, from Bognor Regis, is being recognised alongside several other young people from the Sussex Youth Commission.

The SYC received the Compact 2015 Award for ‘meaningful engagement with the community through excellence in partnership within the community through excellence in partnership working between the voluntary sector and the public sector.’

Joseph said: “I have worked on the relationship between the police and young people. I hope to take the opportunity to implement real change to a diverse audience and to prompt active debate with the multiple agencies in attendance.”

SYC members Sylvia Sigfusdottir, from Bexhill, Josh Funnell, from Littlehampton, Freya Blackman, from Nutley, Cara Exall, from Warnham, Olivia Johnstone, from Lewes, Chiz Nwaosu, from Brighton, Sefton Dosi, from Brighton, and Louis Thursfield, from Eastbourne, were also awarded.

The SYC was set up by the county’s Police and crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne.

Katy Bourne said: “The Sussex Youth Commission have undertaken some fantastic research this year by having conversations with groups of young people who often find it difficult to engage with the police. I’m so pleased the Compact Awards have recognised the value of their hard work with young people in Sussex. The SYC members have shown leadership in their communities as well as dedication.”
