Delia Giles, who works at Hillside Lodge in Pulborough, was presented with the ‘Happiness Award’ at Shaw healthcare’s annual Shaw Star Awards, with judges commending her as “someone who lifts up everyone’s spirits”.

Since joining the home three years ago as a support worker she has quickly moved up the ranks, now supporting residents and colleagues as a team leader.

Ms Giles said: “I’m so happy to have received this award and would like to thank everyone who nominated me.

“For me, it’s the little things that make the difference to residents. I really enjoy getting the residents together on events such as Valentine’s Day to spread the love, decorating the home and getting them as involved as I can.

“Whenever a resident is celebrating a birthday I’ll try and take the time to do something with them for it, whether it be a trip to the pub or a present – something to make them feel appreciated.

“I look forward to working with Shaw and our residents Hillside Lodge for years to come.”

More than 200 people gathered at The Heythrop Resort and Spa in Oxfordshire for Shaw healthcare’s annual awards ceremony, which aims to reward and celebrate the achievements of outstanding staff members from amongst the 4,600 care workers across Shaw’s 80 UK facilities.

Jeremy Nixey, chief executive of Shaw healthcare, said: “We’re now in the eighth year of the Shaw Star Awards; an evening which truly gives us the opportunity to recognise staff across the company for their hard work, dedication and genuine care that they put into their jobs.

“It really is an achievement to be shortlisted, let alone take home an award, as all nominations come from fellow colleagues, service users and their families.

“It’s a night of celebrating the real difference that these incredible individuals make to the quality of care provided, whether in a small, everyday task or the overseeing of an entire home.”
