Neighbourhood Watch fighting crime in beauty spots

NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch members are travelling to beauty spots to give walkers tips on how to combat car crime.

Police say the recent warm weather has attracted thieves, who are stealing from vehicles left at beauty sport car

parks.

Jill Pedersen, police spokeswoman, said: "The message to motorists is to clear all your belongings when you leave your car. Leaflets are being distributed with general crime prevention information."

Phil Marten, crime prevention co-ordinator, said: "You cannot afford to leave anything in your car on view or hidden away or even locked in the boot because a thief will find it.

"Thieves aren't discerning, even a pair of sunglasses or an old coat can be a temptation. "The damage that they cause can be distressing or at the very least a big inconvenience.

"Only take with you what you require so that you don't have to leave anything in the car.

"Neighbourhood Watch members have been working with Sussex Police since 1998 to try and combat car crime, particularly at beauty spot car parks. Under Operation Grouse they visit these car parks and give advice and warnings to car owners about the dangers of car crime. Over the years, this has been found to be an excellent way of educating people and reducing crime."
