Catsfield Village Hall: Now, it is nearing that time of year. Would you like to sing/listen or even play some different Christmas Carols? If so, we are waiting for you at Catsfield Village Hall on 10th December 2016. The “Sussex Harmony Workshop” will start at 3 pm followed by a light supper before a Carol Concert at 7.30pm.

The music comes from 18th & 19th centuries that used to be sung in country churches and chapels to the accompaniment of a village band comprising fiddles, clarionets, oboes, flutes, the odd brass instrument and even a serpent! Therefore most of the tunes are joyful folk melodies some of which have come from Catsfield’s own manuscripts now housed in the Archaeological Society’s vaults in Lewes. This music is meant to be sung with as much enthusiasm as accuracy, therefore don’t worry about the odd wrong note.

Claverham Monday Badminton Club: There were 11 participants this week. It was frantic. It was fun. So come on, join in. You just turn up. First week for all newcomers is free. It starts at 20.00 (or 8.00 pm in old money) and goes on until 22.00 (or 10.00 pm). The normal cost is £5.00. That is £2.50 per hour for a good time. Reflections on a garden: With such cold weather there is a tendency for us humans to forget the birds that have to survive no matter what. Their plight, when food is not as easily accessible as it would be in warmer times, is more noticeable around the bird feeders. My wife and I have various methods of making sure that all the various different types of feeders are catered for. Those, like the tits, that hang on for dear life; the robins and sparrows that wander around underneath the hanging food holders and pick up the bits that are dropped and lastly the mob grazers such as the starlings and magpies. These last two arrive in packs pushing out the smaller varieties of our feathered friends to the periphery. The only bird that seems to make even these two thugs scatter is our woodpecker. He gives them a jab with his pointed beak and even the toughest move out the way.

It shows what relatively mild weather we have been experiencing over the last few weeks as even the grass has continued to grow. I thought it must be ready to hibernate now. But no, it still is adding inches. So on Monday, it was out with the mower and a quick haircut.
