Netherfield

Netherfield Stores and Post Office: The saga of the store is nearly complete. As I picked up my Sunday papers you could view the outline of the changes being made. New space, new counter, new walls, new ideas to please Janette's many customers. To stay open and continue to serve the community was no mean feat. However, it is now in the final stretch towards the ultimate goal of a store and cafe fit for the 21st Century.

I have it on good authority, that there may even be an “opening day” with elephants, tigers, clowns and trapeze artists to entertain her customers. Well the thought would be nice but she does not want it turning into a circus. What Janette really wants is to get back to normal so she can offer her customers the same great service in a new and sparkly environment.

St John The Baptist Church Spring Fair: The Annual Spring Fair at St. John the Baptist Church, Netherfield is on Saturday 23rd April from 10-12pm. This year stalls include gifts from Rwanda Aid, a whole raft of plants and garden items. There will also be an assortment of “knitted animals”, craft and jewellery to brighten up your day, the usual assortment of bric-a-brac, which may contain one of those items that gets on the “Antigues Road Show” or “Flog It”, a tombola, a raffle and a cake stall.

Children’s pictures of St. George will be on display highlighting the many talents of our youngsters. Refreshments available too so nobody needs to go without a cuppa or a cake. There should be something for everyone to brighten up their day and bring a smile! The church looks forward to seeing friends old and new. So come along and enjoy the day

Netherfield Gardens: Now is the time to start mowing that grass and tidying up the last remnants of the seed heads which have been supplying the garden birds for the last few months. It is also the time to start dividing the crocosmia and lily clumps which give us so much pleasure at the height of summer. If left to their own devices they will crowd out the other blooms which provide the summer colour.

It is also the time to give an extra coating of protection to the shed and summer house, if you have one. The wet winter has cast a sheen of green on anything wood and concrete and it is not something that enhances the look of the structure by any means. I am told that power washers can do the trick, but have used a bit of cleaner and a lot of elbow grease to get rid mine in the past. The one benefit of doing it that way is that it doesn’t half give you a thirst.
