Netherfield Horse Ride: This annual event rises in stature every year it is held. 2015 was no exception. The weather was not all it should be, but this did not deter the 70 odd riders that braved the elements to travel up to 10 miles on horseback. For these two specific days, participants can enjoy riding through private land which forms part of our beautiful Sussex countryside.

The woodlands, green fields, tracks and grounds of the Beech Estate and Ivyland Farm are made available by Harry, Sophie and Richard. We must not forget that access is provided in order that charitable funds can be generated for worthwhile causes.

It is not a competition but all riders are awarded a rosette for completing the course.

Proceeds will go to the village hall and Colleen’s Tenderheart Charity, which provides holidays for families with sick children at Crowhurst Park. This year the total donated will be a heart-warming £400.

Some of the funds were also earmarked to renew the signage for future years and to update the careworn catering equipment, which provides such a fantastic feast for the entrants at the end of their ride. The free-range burgers and sausages came from the “Brede Valley” product portfolio.

Sponsorship is also welcomed as it helps to provide a sound financial base on which to stage the event. This year the patrons were “Pony Express Transport” at www.ponyexpresstransport.co.uk, “The Netherfield Arms” at www.netherfieldarms.co.uk and “KRS Cleaning Services” on 07933870612.

Finally, apart from thanking Janette McAuley for organising the event, we must not forget the stirling work undertaken by Mick Scott, who sets up the route that everybody follows. Roll on next year.

Simon Bishop Memorial Seat: This week we must also thank John Boryer, who gave up has valuable time to protect the memorial seat with a couple of coats of varnish. This will help to safeguard the long term future of the seat as a place of rest and contemplation.
