Netherfield Charity Horse Ride: This year’s Netherfield Horse Ride takes place on 12 & 13 September. With special thanks to Ivyland Farm and Beech Estate, horse-riders and walkers can enjoy up to 10 miles of beautiful Netherfield countryside and ancient forestry. These routes are not generally open to the public and tracks are made especially for the day and do not include roads. All proceeds will go to the village and the local Colleen’s Tenderheart Charity which provides holidays for families with sick children at Crowhurst Park. Refreshments and a BBQ will be available. Netherfield Mobile Library: The library is due again in Netherfield, outside the Village Stores on 8 September, between 12.30 (ish) and 13.20. For those who already enjoy the delights of taking out a book, this month new authors recommended for perusal can be found on http://www.lovereading.co.uk/. There are special features on children’s books, top 10s, with “A game for all the family” by Sophie Hannah taking top spot and lots of other features to keep you going back for more. Give it a try as well as visiting the library.

Netherfield Disco: A great night was had by all at the Nethefield Disco on Saturday 29 August in that trendy venue of the Nethefield Village Hall. The food fitted the occasion and all proceeds are being donated to St Michael’s Hospice.

Rye Jazz & Blues Festival: This article showcases a Netherfield resident’s view of a single performance at the Rye Jazz & Blues Festival which finished on August Bank Holiday Monday. As the venues are almost on our doorstep, it is a regular annual part of village life that they are advertised locally. Therefore, it seems appropriate to publish feedback to the residents on whether future events would be worth a visit. The title may deter some as it implies that it

is centred around two distinct forms of music. This is a misconception and means that some gems could be missed. One such jewel was provided by Avery Sunshine, an American Soul Diva. The Rye Community Centre was converted into the 200 seat smoky (from a dry ice machine) Spectrum Jazz Lounge on Saturday night. The performance started at around about eight o’clock. It was filled to capacity. Dana “Big Dane” Johnson, her electrified acoustic guitar playing accompanist, came on stage and and took his seat within touching distance of the audience. Avery followed in that artist-knowing moment when the time is perfect for her to begin the set, the first of two, and immediately took up the beat being generated by Dana. Flawless! Songs from her albums, presented almost “unplugged”, meant that “Pinin’” and “I got sunshine” sounded fresh and exciting. Her piano playing was on the mark, jazzy, sublime and polished. Hits from other artists such as Luther Vandross were given the Avery treatment. Superb! Her innate ability to involve the audience, whistling, singing and “clicking”, created an atmosphere which was spellbinding and magical. Both 50 minute sets were over too quickly and despite a crescendo of foot-stomping, only one encore was managed. Well, we were infringing on the late show of another artist who followed this diva of soul. Any residents of Netherfield who haven’t ventured to this music extravaganza so far should support this festival next year. You won’t be disappointed.
