Netherfield Breakaway Club - The annual Club outing on Thursday September 19 was to Knole, near Sevenoaks. We dodged the showers and were given a talk on the fantastic house and grounds, much larger and more impressive than we were expecting! There was just enough time to enjoy the magnificent rooms and furnishings. Built as a palace by the Archbishops of Canterbury, gifted to Henry VIII, remodelled by the Sackville family (who still live there 400 years on), Knole is the National Trust’s most precious and fragile house, containing a world class collection of furniture and textiles from royal palaces in a series of state rooms evoking extraordinary wealth and grandeur, now passed and faded. The grounds were well worth exploring, with lots of interesting features and secret places together with many beautiful deer roaming freely. The restaurant had an excellent menu and the shop offered lots of exciting goodies. There was even a fascinating film, narrated by the present Duke, showing the long history of Knole where constant refurbishing is on-going. It will certainly be worth another visit in the not too distant future.

The October meeting on Thursday October 17 at The White Hart, Netherfield was well attended to enjoy a session of Extend– seated exercises with Juliette Williams. This was great fun and left everyone laughing and feeling ‘extended’ in body mind and spirit! We thanked Rosemary Parkinson for taking over as treasurer, May and Sheila for organising the raffle, Ann and Juliette made the announcements and hosted. Members were reminded of the Christmas lunch taking place on Thursday December 12 at The Brickwall, Sedlescombe, 12.30 for 1 pm. The menu was discussed and deposits of £5 were received. Tea, coffee and biscuits followed.

The next and final meeting of this year (!) will be on Thursday November 21 , 3 pm at The White Hart when Farming in Sussex, 1800-1900 will be the subject.

We have enjoyed another interesting year with attendances being fairly constant to listen to and partake in a variety of subjects, lunches and outings. New members are always welcome or guests who would like to ‘come when they can’ and pay at each meeting. Netherfield Breakaway Club wishes all members and anyone who likes to read about us a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Netherfield Church - The final service this month is a Holy Communion at Netherfield on Sunday November 24 at the usual time of 10 am. The first service in December will be a Family (non Eucharist) service at Netherfield. This service also has a double baptism so will be well attended and as always with a baptism, be rather special.

The Bishop of Chichester is making his Visitations in our Deanery the first week of December and will be visiting our benefice on Friday December 7. This will commence with a midday Eucharist at Netherfield Church followed by refreshments and a chance to meet the congregation. The Bishop will then have some time with the churchwardens and visit the other two churches, Mountfield and Brightling. Further details of this and the services leading up to Christmas will be announced in the following weeks.

The next day – Saturday December 8 is our St. Nicholas Fair from 10 am. until midday, which includes the very popular, Brunch with Santa. Admission is £2.50 to include a visit to Santa in his grotto, receive a present and then enjoy a bacon butty breakfast. There will be seasonal stalls, a lucky dip, raffle and other Christmas delights so we look forward to seeing you. Paul Smith, Churchwarden.

WHITE HART - On Monday November 11 the ladies darts team played the second leg of the knock out cup beating Ticehurst 6-5 away, this put the ladies into the semi finals. There were wins for Jane, Debbie, Marie and Sarah in the singles and in the doubles there were wins for Jane/Mandy and finally in the trebles there were wins for Marie/Debbie/Mandy. Top scores for the night were Marie125 and Debbie 115.

On Thursday November 14 White Hart B played the Senlac, the pub team was held together well by Rick Warner and Marie Colvin who were the only players to win in the darts and the push penny. In the darts the team lost 5-2 and in the push penny 3-2. In the doubles the team managed to win the ladies pairs there were some top scores Mandy 100, Bob 125,100,116, Rick 100 and finally Marie 123,100. The team played very well and scored well but it’s always hard when you’re playing the best team in the league.

There are various groups meeting throughout the month including Boules, The Rover group, The Harley Davidson group, T.R.Cars and The Breakaway Club, if you would like to know more about any of the dates and times or the darts and football teams please give Sean a ring on 01424 838382.
