DOWNSTAIRS AND UPSTAIRS: We had a visit below stairs at the Town Hall last week. I have lived in Lewes all my life and have never been behind the scenes so to speak. It proved to be very interesting and informative and I would recommend it. Our invitation came through the Riverside Club from the Mayor who took us upstairs where we were also shown into his parlour where he proceeded to tell us about all the amazing gifts in the cabinets and where they had come from.

ST MARY’S GARDENING CLUB: On Monday the St Mary’s Gardening Club is having its first meeting of the year at the St Mary’s Social Centre, Christie Rd, at 7.45pm. We are delighted to have Trevor Weeks from the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service. If members would like to help the work of this organisation they could donate old towels or pillow cases but not any cat food as previously suggested, as the animals have special requirements. There will be refreshments as well as a raffle and bookstall. The competition this month is a table decoration for Valentine’s Day. Potatoes and bags will be available for the Great Potato Challenge in the Summer Show Subscriptions are due this month (£10 pa). Visitors are always welcome (£2).

LEWES NEVILLE WI: The first meeting of 2017 of Lewes Neville WI was on Wednesday January 18 at St Mary’s Church Hall. Our speakers for the evening were David and Eleanor Robins whose talk Fancy a cuppa? was all about tea. They spoke interestingly about their subject and we had the opportunity to smell and touch numerous teas although sadly we did not get to sample them. There was the opportunity to buy some of the teas afterwards. After refreshments we had a quiz based on the word tea. The treasurer was delighted that most members had remembered to bring their cheques to renew their subscriptions which always makes her job easier. On the evening of January 25 a good number of our members had a late Christmas dinner at the Highlands pub in Ridgewood. This is a lovely, spacious venue where we were well attended by the staff. It turned out to be Burns night and they were offering a special Scottish menu as well and a few members enjoyed haggis. We all agreed it had been a very enjoyable evening. Our next meeting is on February 15th when Susan Margolis will tell us about Being a Nanny in Israel. The competition will be a baby photo of yourself.CHRIST CHURCH: This week we have marked the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Sunday School at our predecessor church, the Tabernacle in Lewes High Street, on 29 January 1817. An exhibition display in the church tells the story of the Sunday School. Christ Church Tots meets today (Friday) from 9.30am to 11am for a programme of activities for pre-school children and their carers. On Sunday morning worship will be led by the Rev David Hague and begins at 10.30am. All are welcome. Looking ahead, a date for your diary. Our next Think Tank meeting is on Wednesday February 22 from 7.30pm to 9pm, when Dr Roger Cockrell will talk about Dostoevsky and the Modern World. Although writing in 19th century Russia, many of the themes in Dostoevsky’s books find an echo in our times.

WALLANDS SCHOOL: The 3G pitches was the setting for a very enjoyable, exciting afternoon of football on Tuesday, with the conclusion of the Lewes District Primary Schools League. We had two matches to play and it was all about a win or a draw for us, and I am delighted to report that we won both matches 1-0 and consequently are the cup winners. This is the third time Wallands have won this title in the six years the league has been running. We would like to say congratulations to all 13 Yr 6 boys who over the various weeks have contributed to winning this cup. Mr Burgess, their coach said ‘Brilliant news.’ A well-deserved win by their coach and children. Mrs Taylor consistently reported how well the boys had played together, considering they’re not a regular team and commented on their respect to all and sportsmanship, a credit to the school. Well done boys.

ST MARY’S SUPPORTERS CLUB: Bingo tonight cash prizes and raffle. Eyes down at 8.30pm. Everyone welcome. Tomorrow, Saturday, there is a Table Top Sale in the Club from noon to 4pm. An ideal time to declutter. Call 07715023307 to book a table £10. Also tonight, Friday, it is quiz night, come and give it a go. Starting at 8pm. £2 per person with teams of no more than four. Everyone welcome.
