Nevill

NEW APPARATUS: Good to see the Nevill green open with the new play area, and being put to great use. I think it is a bit of a shame there wasn't more consultation though as it has taken up a lot of room and they also want to add more with a trim trail. I think other green spaces around the estate like Mt Harry Rd or Cross Way may be more suitable for this equipment and leave the rest of the space on the recreation green for the sports and football etc.

NEVILL SPORTS HISTORY: 1989 sees another change at the helm, when Rick Courcha take over the Chair of SMC Sports with Sheila, his wife, assisted by David and Kay Hacket. In 1992 Kath Reynolds took over the refreshments which she still does today. In 1998 Sports Day had its 50th Anniversary and every competitor received a medal which was donated by Intersport of Lewes and were presented by the Chuckle Brothers. I have sent a picture of those involved in arranging this anniversary.

NEVILL JUVENILE BONFIRE SOCIETY: An Extravaganza to celebrate the Queen’s official 90th birthday. This follows on from previous events to celebrate royal occasions on the estate, The Extravaganza is to be held on Saturday June 11 on Nevill Green. The event includes a tea for all residents of Nevill estate who have reached the age of 90, with the Mayor of Lewes coming along to cut the celebratory cake. We are still searching for all those residents on the estate who have reached the age of 90 so we can include them in our special celebration.

As in past years, the society are holding the event in two parts with an afternoon fayre between noon and 4.30pm followed by an evening of live music from 6pm to 10pm. The fayre includes displays, games, stalls, food and drink. Arena events are to include a display from the Lewes Dance Academy, a ladies’ and men’s Tug of War competition between the bonfire societies for the coveted bonfire cup, a speed torch-making competition and the very best of music from the Starfish Youth Music Project. The headline act for the evening music will be The Fat Belly Jones Band, a popular nine piece band, supported by senior Starfish bands. The evening will be concluded with a small firework display paying tribute to the Queen and another Olympic year. This part of the event is ticketed with tickets priced at £4 in advance and family tickets at £15 (two adults and up to three children). These will be available at Lewes Local newsagents on Nevill Estate. We hope many local community groups will have stalls at the Extravaganza and contact me on 07772031269 or by email [email protected]
