Nevill

NEVILL SPORTS DAY HISTORY: Over the next few weeks it is my intention to give a short history of one of the most important days in the history of Nevill, the annual athletic competition. This is open to all children of Lewes not just children of the Nevill. The fact that it has been running since 1948 shows what good community and tenacity of working together can achieve. Long forgotten names will be mentioned and if anyone sees a name they might know, please get in touch with them or me, as we want to fill in as many gaps as possible, as inevitably memories fade. The first name many of you will remember is Maurice Breeze, who lived in Caburn Crescent and was chairman of the Sports Committee from its conception to 1977. He had two children Andrew and Shelia who, as far as I know, left Lewes long ago. If anyone is in touch with them, please ask them to contact me.

POP-UP’S FROM IMOGEN: For the last three weeks a Pop-up Surgery has occurred outside Wallands School on the Nevill Road exit. The idea is for local councillors to meet residents, introduce themselves and be available for the voicing of concerns. Issues identified are: the lack of rubbish bins and subsequent distribution of litter in the area; traffic issues around the school at drop off and pick up times, which includes inconsiderate parking and non-observance of the speed limit. Interest and suggestions for the refurbishment of the play equipment on Nevill Green; some broken alcohol bottles; suspicion of illegal drinking/obtaining alcohol. Broken/dangerous kerbstone in Highdown Road; the need for a pedestrian crossing on The Offham Road and someone also observed that the dog poo situation on The Nevill seems to have slightly improved. Hurray. Priory and Castle Ward Town Councillors are discussing the introduction of new litter receptacles, while also chasing up the District Council to clear existing litter and have got them to clean up on Landport Road, near the school, and an area between Offham Road and Newton Road. Active discussions on new litter picking teams are ongoing. I have contacted East Sussex Council with a request for information on how to obtain Vehicle Activated Signs as warnings for drivers approaching the school. Nevill Residents Association is hosting a consultation on the extra funding for equipment in Nevill Green, please send your ideas and suggestions them:http://nevillresidentsassociation.weebly.com/contact-us.html https://www.facebook.com/NevillResidentsAssociation/?ref=hl I have had a gentle, but positive discussion with both the shop owners on Highdown Road pointing out that the sale of alcohol to underage drinkers is an offence. The kerbstone in Highdown Road has been reported and will keep being monitored. Any parent keen to add their voice to the pressure group campaigning for a crossing on the Offham Road could email Ruth O Keefe Ruth o Keeffe

WALLANDS SCHOOL: If you are thinking of applying for a place in our Nursery for September 2016, application forms are available from the office. We manage nursery admissions ourselves, unlike Reception places which are managed by ESCC. Reception is now full for September and East Sussex will manage the waiting list. Tesco Bags of Help: We have just been informed that we have been awarded £10,000 for our planting project so many thanks to all of you who used your tokens to vote. After finally being able to play our semi-final and final of the Lewes District Netball Tournament here at Wallands last Friday and winning, Wallands went through to the South Downs Area Tournament on Wednesday held in Eastbourne. We required eight players instead of the team of five that have been playing, so they only had one session to train as a new team prior to the tournament. They played four games back to back and Mr Perry and Mrs Taylor reported back how impressed they were with their play and consecutive year, and will go on to represent the South Downs area at the County Finals to be held at the Sussex Games on June 29. Congratulations to all involved. The weather was kind to the girls who attended the Lewes District Girls Football Festival on Thursday. They had an opportunity to play three games on the 3G pitch in Lewes and came away feeling extremely pleased with themselves and their team work, and were very excited that they won. Mrs Joseph reported back on the excellent sporting behaviour and what an excellent captain Anna Swallow made, well done girls. This weekend at Lewes Leisure Centre Daisy, Caitlin, Izzie, Rosie, Zoë, Robin and Florence will take part in a swimathon to raise money for Sports Relief. Good luck girls. Congratulations to Joe Woollard 6ST/ZH who attended the Battle of Kent Kickboxing event on March 13. Joe had a great competition and won a trophy.

CHRIST CHURCH: Today we have our Good Friday service at 10am and this will be led by Rev John Gordon. Later at 6pm members of our church will be taking part in the Walk of Witness which leaves from St Pancras Church. Our Easter morning service will be led by David Sweet and Eleanor Smith with Holy Communion.

LEWES NEVILLE WI: Met on Wednesday March 16 at St Mary’s Church Hall. The speaker was Vicky Blackburn who spoke on Guide Dogs for the Blind. Those of us who had been hoping that a dog would accompany her were a little disappointed but in fact the talk was most informative and entertaining. Many of the myths regarding guide dogs were shown to be false. We learnt about aspects of the training of these dogs: two thirds of the puppies do not make the grade. It costs £50,000 over its lifetime to train a dog but they transform the life of a blind person giving them independence. The competition was Flower of the Month which was won by Kay Hackett with a gorgeous daffodil. Next month’s meeting is on Wednesday April 20 and the speaker David Branwell’s talk is entitled No 9 Bus to Utopia. Visits the world’s most extraordinary communities, which sounds rather intriguing.
