NEVILL RECREATION GROUND: Nevill Residents Association has been selected to receive an award from Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, funded by the 5p carrier bag charge. The amount it will receive depends on the public and customers can vote in local Tesco stores from 27 February. The association hopes to use the funding to make improvements to the communal space at Nevill Green, adding better landscaping as well as a trim trail and adventure play equipment designed for all ages. Our plans will make a big difference to the area but of course we need your votes. Customers will be able to vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store.

FOLK MUSIC: A new, relaxed, monthly gathering to play traditional folk music starts Wednesday 9 March at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Highdown Road. Visit www.meetup.com/nevill-folk for further details.

WALLANDS SCHOOL: Over the half term the solar panel process was finished. Ovesco will be coming into school at a later date to show the children how the panels work. We are also developing the habitat to encourage native species migration from the nearby South Downs National Park area. This planting is still at a delicate phase and we have been talking about how to look after the trees and shrubs whilst they take root. Tesco Community Fund project has been voted as one of the three most worthwhile projects in the region and has secured funding of £8000, £10000 or £12000 depending on a public vote which will take place in Tesco stores starting next week. Please help us by visiting your local store and voting for us. As part of the planting programme we have over 400 new saplings being delivered to school in the week beginning March 7. We need to get these in the ground as soon as possible and would like your help, please can you bring wellies and a spade to school when you collect your child on Thursday March 10 and help your child to plant a tree. Gabriel Penrose and Cameron Wright competed at the Sussex School Games Cross Country Finals at Hickstead where the weather was awful. This competition is at county level and Gabriel placed 30/117 and Cameron placed 90/117, enabling the boys team to finish sixth. South Downs overall also finished sixth, well done boys. Mr Perry and Mrs Taylor on Inset day took 10 boys and 10 girls to another county level, the Sussex School Games Indoor Athletics Finals at Horsham where every member of the team competed in a variety of track and field events to gather points. Overall Wallands, representing the South Downs, finished joint seventh. Mr Perry reported that every child gave their all and he was delighted with their performance.

BOROUGH BONFIRE SOCIETY: Are holding a Fun Casino Night on Saturday March 12, 7.30pm for 8pm at St Mary’s Hall. Entry is £5 to include $50 of fun money that can be exchanged for playing chips. Further chips can be purchased. There will be food available, £6.50, either pulled beef in a roll with Monterey jack cheese, fried onions and coleslaw or special macaroni cheese with coleslaw and garlic bread. There is an optional fancy dress theme, Gangsters and Molls. A bar will be available and there will be a raffle. All welcome including children.

CHRIST CHURCH: More than 40 people came to the meeting of the Thinktank on February 24. Members of the interfaith chaplaincy team at Lewes Prison, Dale Kendrick, Chris Rooke, Beverly Fraser, Evlynn Sharp and Paul Collins, gave a highly informative and moving account of their day to day work. They spoke about the ways in which prisoners were prepared for release, victim awareness and restorative justice. They emphasised that although there were reductions in government support for the Prison Service, considerable help was provided by volunteers from the local community. Our Mothering Sunday worship with be from 10.30am with Rev Michael Davies leading. Today, Friday, we have our Tots group meeting from 9.30am. Members of our church will be attending and taking part in the Women’s World Day of Prayer at St Pancras Church.
