THIS Bank Holiday Monday Nevill Juvenile Bonfire Society is holding a Diamond Jubilee Extravaganza at the Nevill Green to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The Extravaganza will take place in two parts with the culmination including a double beacon lighting.
Kicking off at 12noon, the event will feature a variety of attractions to appeal to all tastes and ages. It will open with a Pageant of Nautical Hats for which entries are sought from across the town.
Zany and outrageous creations based on a galleon, yacht, cruise liner, rowing boat or any other ship are encouraged. You can bring your creation along at noon on the day. Entry is free and all entrants will receive a prize with special prizes for the best creations.
There will also be Ladies’ and Men’s Tug-of-War, together with the ever-popular Crown and Bouquet throwing competitions. In the arena there will be children’s fun races and a display by The Dance Academy.
Around The Green there will be a variety of table top stalls as well as community and commercial stands, games and rides together with live music from Starfish bands and a ‘Bonfire Memorabilia Exhibition’. This free afternoon event will finish at 4.30pm.
In the evening there will be a ticketed event starting at 6pm with live music from Duncan Disorderly and the Scallywags with support from senior Starfish bands. Tickets for this event, to include a hog roast, burger or vegetarian option, are priced at £4 up to Sunday or £5 on the day.
The culmination of the evening will include an Olympic torch and rings, the lighting of a Royal Jubilee Beacon at 10pm and a firework display. In addition, at 10.30pm there will be a separate beacon lit at Landport Bottom at the foot of the Old Racecourse motor roads, where the society holds its annual celebration.
