New book on lighthouse tale

THE STORY of the Beachy Head Lighthouse has been told in a new book by former lighthouse keeper Rob Wassell.

The book will give people a better understanding of the hardships of life as a lighthouse keeper and the history of the building which first shone on October 2 1902.

Mr Wassell said: “Researching this book has been a fantastic project, uncovering the incredible facts about its construction and having the opportunity to speak to former lighthouse keepers who were actually stationed at the lighthouse.

He has donated 50 per cent of all profits to the ‘Save the Stripes’ campaign to protect the lighthouse’s famous red-and-white stripes.

The book can be bought online: and soon from Eastbourne Tourist Information Office, Beachy Head Visitor Centre and other outlets.
