New boss for Westergate centre

New manager Simon Wagstaff is putting the community ahead of commuting as he begins work at the Six Villages Sports Centre.

Mr Wagstaff took on the position at the start of June to build upon last year's 100,000-plus users of the Westergate facility.

He was previously an IT project manager and team manager based in Slough.

Travelling to and from the Berkshire town and his Walberton home devoured four hours every day. He took redundancy in late 2007 after 20 years in the computer industry and took stock of his life. His role for the past three years as a governor at Westergate Community School, next to the sports centre, alerted him to the sports centre's potential.

He convinced headteacher Steve Nelmes to take him on.

"I may be new to leisure centre management but have a lot of experience as a manager," said Mr Wagstaff (49).

"Being involved with the school opened my eyes to the fact I could put that experience to take the sports centre forward and benefit the community. I am going to be looking at the services we provide and enhancing them in line with what people tell them we should be doing."

The centre was opened in January, 2001.
