Three years ago Claire Jacobs and Jayne Van Rensburg collected a petition together to improve the rundown local playground on Farm Green Bevendean.

Unfortunately, Brighton and Hove Borough Council were not able to fund the refurbishments of the site.

At this stage a third mum Mitch Alexander got involved in the project and the trio worked together, with advice from local councillor Dan Yates, to find alternative sources of funding to pay for new equipment and improve the play area.

Mitchie Alexander, posted the following on the Friends Of Farm Green community group Facebook page, she said: “After three years of meetings, discussions, ideas and fundraising, Friends Of Farm Green community group are very proud to announce that Lower Bevendean has finally got the new playground that the local children deserve.

“Works are now complete and we will be holding a grand opening celebration on Saturday) from 1pm to 4pm.

“Come along for the afternoon and celebrate this brilliant community achievement. The Mayor of Brighton and Hove will be cutting the ribbon to officially open the playground at 2pm. There will run games and activities throughout the afternoon, including face-painting, giant bubbles, skipping ropes and hula hoops, badge-making, make a clay creature and there will be drinks and nibbles for all who come along. Brighton and Hove Council did not have the money to replace the run-down equipment themselves but supported us throughout the process of us raising the massive 70k needed ourselves.

“This is a huge community achievement and Friends of Farm Green invite everyone to come celebrate in what will be a fun filled afternoon!”
