New clock celebrates jubilee year

A new clock has been installed on the southern face of the town hall’s clock tower.

It began to be put in place on Tuesday and should be finished for today.

The clock has been given to the town by proud Bognorian and former town councillor Ken Scutt.

He donated £2,000 out of the total cost of just under £4,000. The rest was paid by Bognor Regis Town Council.

Mr Scutt was keen to create a permanent memorial for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Mr Scutt, 84, of Nyewood Lane, said: “I’m very pleased the clock has now arrived. It will be a landmark for years to come.

“I wanted to provide something for Bognor for the jubilee year.”

The clock is the first along the town’s seafront to benefit 
the thousands of visitors and residents who walk along there each year.

Its position some 60ft above the ground should also make it visible from out at sea.

Mr Scutt suggested the clock at his last meeting as a town councillor 18 months ago. Bognor Regis Town Council needed planning and listed building consent for the clock.

Its Roman numerals match the north-facing clock which was installed for the millennium. But the new clock’s diameter is slightly smaller at 1.22m.

Town mayor Cllr Eileen Anderson said: “The new clock is a really fine gesture from Mr Scutt.

“It’s something he will be remembered for and will also benefit the town.”
