New community bus service for Hailsham area

A NEW BUS SERVICE to link The Observatory Science Centre and Herstmonceux Castle with Polegate and Hailsham starts today, March 9.

The 49 service runs on the second Friday of each month on a circular route from Polegate Station, where it connects with fast trains from Brighton and Lewes, also Ashford, Hastings and Eastbourne.

The low floor 16 seat minibus runs via Wartling to the Science Centre and Castle, returning through Herstmonceux and Hailsham. It will run every hour from 10am until 5pm from March to November.

Philip Ayers CCB director, said: ‘We are delighted to have had the opportunity to provide this new service on a trial basis. It follows discussions between the Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux Castle and Herstmonceux Parish Council. The service has been designed to connect with trains from both directions at Polegate Railway Station to offer a public transport choice to people wanting to visit either attraction. We hope to provide through ticketing with the trains in due course.”

Dignatries including MP Norman Baker and county council chairman Cllr Chris Dowling will attend a launch event at 9.45am by Polegate Railway Station today, March 9.

Hailsham Town Cllr Barry Marlowe, a founding member of the Hailsham Bus Alliance, said: “I am delighted to see this new service introduced, which will be of great benefit to both visitors to these local attractions and the people of Hailsham, who will now have an additional nine journeys from the town centre to Polegate railway station.”
