New cooker benefits free Sompting cooking course

A new cooker has been donated to St Peter's Church hall, to be used by community groups, by a social enterprise company which runs a cooking course there.

The group Health Champions will use the equipment for their ‘cooking with confidence’ free courses at the hall in Bowness Avenue, Sompting.

The six-week courses, funded by Adur and Worthing Councils, are aimed at people who ‘need a confidence boost in the kitchen’ and offer ‘hands-on help for creating easy, low-cost and healthy meals’, according to Karen Dennison, director of Health Champions.

She said the courses were attended by adults and parents on a low income, adults who lack cooking skills, carers, isolated men, older bereaved men, young mothers and unemployed adults who gain valuable work experience.

St Peter’s Church offers use of the hall free of charge and many congregation members have attended or supported by donating herbs or publicising the sessions, added Mrs Dennison.

The church has also donated starter packs with herbs and spoons for each participant from Penfold Charity.

Mrs Dennison said: “We are extremely grateful to all the support given by the congregation of St Peter’s, so when their cooker was looking a bit worse for wear, we decided to step in and fund a new one.

“It’s already been put to good use, which is great!”

Rev Erika Howard from St Peter’s Church said: “Working with Health Champions has been a great partnership and the new cooker benefits all the community groups which use the hall, which is a real bonus to the people of Sompting village.”

The next course will start on Monday, January 9 and sessions will run from 10am to midday or midday to 2pm.

Other free courses run by the group include ‘Cooking for Health’, starting Wednesday, January 11 from 6pm to 8pm at Worthing High school.
