New date for atom veterans

VETERANS of nuclear bomb tests in the 1950s and 1960s have been offered some hope after the Supreme Court set aside a full day to hear an appeal against a legal setback to their battle for compensation.

The Atomic Veterans Claimant Group is appealing a decision by the Court of Appeal last year that too much time has elapsed for the claims to succeed.

Ex-serviceman Malcolm Pike, of Grange Court Drive, was one of those forced to watch nuclear testing in the Pacific from the deck of his ship.

A spokesman for the veterans’ group said: “We are fighting for compensation from the Ministry of Defence for a range of illnesses that were caused by the atomic tests. The Ministry of Defence is trying to hide behind technical arguments so that the real truth is not exposed.”

The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case on July 28.
