New design for Pavilion lift

THE fine tuning of De La Warr Pavilion redevelopment plans passed through Rother Planning Committee last week.

Since listed building consent was given for two new single storey extensions in 2001 - part of the 6million refurbishment - alterations have been made to the plans.

Architects John McAslan and Partners say restoring the theatre foyer to its original row of glass doors by moving the lift will not be possible.

The lift was introduced in 1970's and investigation has shown that moving it now would have serious knock-on effects for the layout and structure of the acoustic balcony ceiling and walls. It will stay in place but have a new simple and elegant frosted glass design.

Rother asked that detailed drawings or material samples are submitted before work is begun. The plans will now be referred to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for approval.

A number of other changes were also suggested, including:

- wider access stairs down to the new studio workshop

- the access ramp for the disabled, linking the entrance hall to the auditorium foyer, relocated to the south of the foyer

- a new interval bar on the north side of the foyer

- an additional catering services lift at the eastern end of the building

- revised layout to first floor toilets to include a cubicle for the disabled.

The failure to restore the theatre foyer to its original glory was seen as regrettable by the architects but would be detrimental to the design of the theatre.

The new lift will occupy a smaller space, set back 70cm behind the level of the side wall, allowing the flush of the original door panels to be restored to an extent.
