New dyslexia group helps parents to read the signs

About a dozen families of children with dyslexia have benefited from a group started by a Barnham mother.

Jan Ellis said she was encouraged by the response to the West Sussex Dyslexia Support Group.

She is chairing the first organisation of its kind in the area, which recently began to provide advice to parents in the same situation as herself.

She said too many mums and dads of dyslexic youngsters were baffled about getting help for them and lacked the chance to talk to others.

"We have three or four regulars who are joining us," said Mrs Ellis (41), of Orchard Way. "Many of the inquiries we've had concern the education of their children.

"Parents have been on the point of pulling them out of school because they don't know where to find the support they need.

"Dyslexia is a learning difficulty which affects one in 20 children," "Dyslexic children struggle with spelling, reading, writing and multiplication tables.

"They may also confuse left and right and have difficulty with organisational skills."

Jan Ellis and her husband, Craig, have dyslexic twin sons Ben Murphy and Tyler Murphy (11).

They were formally diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of seven. Mrs Ellis can be contacted by e-mail: [email protected] or phone on 01243 553280.
