A meeting was arranged following two consecutive months in which there was a noticeable drop in attendees at the market, which is held in Queensway on the third Saturday of every month from 9am to 1pm, said councillor Carol Albury.

She said: “It’s difficult in Lancing to get the footfall to come into the centre.

“It’s a catch 22. We need more popular stalls, but we won’t get more popular stalls without the footfall.

“We have to attract people down there with something.”

Mrs Albury recently met with market officers from Adur District Council – which runs the market – to discuss ideas. As a result, extra advertising materials for the market have been designed, including posters for bus shelters, banners and flyers.

There are also plans to reach out to entertainers, such as choirs and singers, and hold activities for children, in the hope that having something different every month will help attract more stall holders, Mrs Albury said.

“It needed to be looked at in a different way, and we have done that now,” she said.

People are very positive about the market and it’s wonderful we have one, it just takes a while to build up.”

A spokesperson from Adur District Council said there had been ‘a significant increase’ in the number of stalls recently, ‘reaching near capacity’ on some occasions.

“We’ve recently reviewed ways to help promote the market and, in addition to the posters, postcards and social media already in place, we have refreshed and increased the number of roadside banners available for display and produced some dedicated bus shelter advertising panels,” the spokesperson said.
