New estate could be ready in 18 months

A planned housing estate on a North Bersted nursery could be built within a year-and-a-half.

The developer of the proposed development of Chalcroft Nurseries says the scheme would be an ideal way of meeting the need for new homes.

Orchard Enterprises (Southern) has applied for outline planning permission to demolish all the buildings on the land north of Chalcraft Lane and replace them with up to 70 dwellings.

The firm's planning agent, Paul Collins, said: "The site is also relatively small and self-contained with very few physical infrastructure requirements that would delay construction.

"Currently, on the assumption that outline planning permission for up to 70 dwellings was granted this year, it is anticipated detailed planning permission would be sought and secured by February 2010 with construction starting in March 2010 and site completion taking place by the end of that year.

"The proposed development would achieve the redevelopment of an underused site and would therefore accord with government guidance in respect of making the best use of brownfield land."

The indicative layout of the scheme shows a mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced two and three-bedroom houses.

They would be two and two and a half storeys high in a variety of styles. Up to 28 of them will be affordable housing.
