New fitness machine up and running at Bexhill hospital

PATIENTS at Bexhill hospital are to benefit from a new state-of-the-art fitness testing machine, thanks to the joint efforts of the Friends of Bexhill and Conquest Hospitals.

The Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) machine uses computer technology to measure a persons fitness levels, helping doctors to make decisions on the best care for the individual.

The equipment, which cost 36,000, is non-invasive and provides an objective measurement of how well a person's heart and lungs are functioning.

David Young, a representative of the League of Friends of Bexhill Hospital was given a hands on demonstration of the machine by Consultant Anaesthetists Dr Tim Arnold and Dr Christopher Scanlan, assisted by Specialist Nurse Robert Lott, in the presence of General Manager Stella Goddard.

Dr Scanlan said: "We are very grateful to the Friends for helping us provide this service to our patients. Before we had this equipment, we used to ask the patient lots of questions to assess their general fitness, which was a fairly subjective process.

"With this new equipment, the process is entirely objective. It gives an accurate summary of how fit a person is which helps us make decisions about that individual and can change the way we manage them."
