Residents who live in South Heighton, Denton and Newhaven are being offered the opportunity to have their garden waste collected as part of a new service being offered by Lewes District Council. It will be offering this service to all residents of the district by 2019.

Collections are scheduled to begin in April 2016, with residents in Peacehaven and Telscombe being invited to join later on in the summer. This follows a very successful trial with Seaford residents last year.

An annual subscription of £70 is payable for the ten month service and a new 240 litre wheelie bin will be provided to those who sign up and pay the subscription.

Councillor Paul Franklin, Lead Member for Waste and Recycling at Lewes District Council, said: “Thanks to residents of Seaford who took part in the successful trial, we are delighted to announce the expansion of the garden waste collection service.

“Due to the feedback we received, the new service will be offered for an extra month of the year and will now be available between February and November.

“The garden waste will be turned into compost by Tamar organics, ready to be used by gardeners as a soil conditioner - a sustainable solution for the environment.”

By charging for the service, residents who don’t have a garden, who compost at home or do not wish to use, will not pay for the service through their council tax.

Residents can sign up for the service at any time.
