New group set up to help residents find their green fingers

But although it might not be possible to rent an allotment in other parts of the country, there are plots currently up for grabs in Battle.

The newly reformed Senlac Allotment Association has worked hard with Battle Town Council, which has drawn up a list of allotments that are available now.

Anne Gavin, secretary of the association, said: “We have four allotment sites in and around the beautiful and historic town of Battle all of which have at least one allotment available at a very low rent. They come in various shapes and sizes and some will need a little TLC to get them back to the real business of growing your own very delicious fruit and vegetables.

“All who engage in this amazing pastime will tell you there is nothing more rewarding than your own produce. We would welcome you to join us. Come on your own or as a family as long as you are keen. Why not share an allotment with a friend or another family? We all need to teach youngsters the joys of growing their own and its surprising what vegetables they start to enjoy when they have grown them themselves. Nothing could be easier than a row of potatoes or a wigwam of runner beans.

You don’t have to an expert. All you need is a little time and energy and a commitment to keep your patch tidy.

Allotment holders are friendly people and will give you loads of advice should you ask - glad to lean on a fork for a few minutes!”
