Terry Robinson, of Joys Croft, put an appeal in the Observer in October, offering the tree free to a good home.

Karen Buckley responded on behalf of St Mary Magdalene Church, Bersted Street, and was delighted when Terry gave the go-ahead.

He said: “Karen and two fit men came and dug up the Christmas tree. They took it away to be decorated and used initially for St Mary Magdalene Church’s Christingle on November 29, before being planted out.

“Wendy and I are so grateful for the Observer’s assistance in making this happen and saving a very handsome tree in the process.

“We both wish this tree a long and healthy life in the peaceful grounds of this South Bersted church, and will be sure to occasionally visit it and say ‘hello’!”

Mr Robinson said they first bought the tree in 2009, when it sat in its pot on the window sill in their small bay window.

In January, 2010, he planted it in the front garden, where it has flourished. Five years later, it was about 10ft tall. Rather than saw it down, as it had outgrown the small garden, Mr Robinson wanted to find the tree a new home.
